Getting Kids Involved in Baking during the Holidays
‘Mum I’m bored!’ How many households hear those dreaded words during the school holidays? If your children are stuck inside because it’s raining and they’ve already spent all day on their computers already, what else is there to do?
How about getting them involved in the kitchen? Everybody loves cakes, and baking can be much more fun when the whole family can get involved. Getting kids into the kitchen will also allow them to learn, get a bit messy, and be creative all at the same time – which can’t be a bad thing, particularly if you get tasty cakes at the end of it!
Follow these tips to ensure happy – and most importantly tasty – memories and fun in the kitchen with your little ones. And all you need are kid-friendly recipes, ingredients, aprons and wipes, and patience!
1. Make sure the recipes are kid-friendly. They have to be easy and fun to make, quick, and fun to eat. Maybe get some coloured icing or sugar-paper decorations to go on the top, or put their favourite fillings in the centre depending on what you make.
2. Get an apron for everyone if possible. Maybe even buy one of the aprons that kids can design themselves, giving them extra entertainment!
3. Give every child an equally important job to do in the preparation stages. For instance, someone could be mixing the dough, while someone else could be preparing the icing for later on.
4. Finally, and most importantly of all – always let them lick the bowl! This will save on washing up and keep them quiet a little bit longer!

Although messy we have had some of the best times during recent holidays baking cakes and the girls (I have 2 – one 5 and one 7) love the creative process. I would suggest to all mums to try it..
I agree Sarah. Baking cakes is great and although you always end up with flour in impossible to clean cracks and crevices its worth every minute of the cleaning afterwards
