Beginner’s Instructions For Cake Decoration

beginners cake decorationSo, you’re making your first inroads into the world of cake decoration? Congratulations, you’re going to love it! However, it’s not as easy as professionals may make it seem. That’s why we’ve come up with this list of tips for the beginners out there. Good luck, and happy decoration!

Make sure you have the right type of cake to work with. If you’re just learning your craft, then trying to do so on an uneven, undercooked will slow you down massively! Make sure that the cake you use is nicely golden, and with a slightly bouncy crust, otherwise you may find your icing and other toppings retreating into the cake itself.

Keep the cake in optimum conditions. You wouldn’t necessarily think so, but the conditions that a cake is kept in can have a big impact on how easy it is to decorate. Firstly, ensure that you allow the cake enough time to cool properly before trying to apply any icing: a couple of hours in the fridge once it’s cooled can actually help a lot too.

Shape Your Cake. Whilst it can be ok to decorate a cake with the natural curved top that comes with oven baking, it is normal for a cake decorator to slice across the top so that it is level: a far more effective surface for decoration! Ensure that you take the time to make sure your cake is as level and blemish free as possible before beginning, and your decoration will benefit as a result.
